5 Hacks to Combat Dark Circles & Puffy Eyes

We’re 2 weeks into the new decade and if you’ve been struggling to maintain resolutions, haven’t been getting as much sleep as required or, have decided not to partake in dry January and now have the eye bags to prove it....I’m here to help! We’ve all been there and if worst comes to the worst, I’ll help you to cover them up 😉

Dark circles are the result of swollen blood vessels. Unfortunately, heredity, aging, and diet can make them worse and lead to puffy, dark under-eye bags, making us look older than we are. Ugh! Hope is not lost, though.

Here are my 5 top hacks for helping to eradicate the dreaded dark circle!

Hack 1 - The old school tricks are effective! Cold teabags, cold spoons and cucumber are all very good for tightening and brightening the area. The caffeine and antioxidants in tea help to ease puffiness and discolouration whilst the vitamin C in cucumber reduces the appearance of darkness.

Hack 2 - If you don’t already, start using eye cream, right now! The skin under your eyes is thin and delicate, when blood builds up in those vessels, dark circles are more noticeable. Eye creams help moisturise this skin and ingredients like caffeine combat puffiness while collagen and retinol help maintain skin’s firmness to fight wrinkles and keep those dark circles from peaking out. If you haven’t got one, send me your orders!!

Hack 3 - Avoid excess salt and alcohol. I know this one is tricky, it instantly cuts out the good stuff! Think about this though, excess salt leads to water retention and thus puffiness, while alcohol widens blood vessels making eyes puffier and circles darker. Essential vitamins like vitamin K ease blood flow, reducing build-up under the eyes. Make sure you’re eating plenty of dark, leafy greens and drinking lots of water to help with circulation. I’m REALLY trying to increase my greens intake at the moment, there’s spinach in my smoothies and a side salad with everything!

Hack 4 - Massage! When you’re applying your eye creams, gently massage the area with your ring finger. It will help again with circulation, it’ll drain toxins and improve product absorption. There are video demos of this over on our Instagram page.

Hack 5 - If all else fails, cover them up! Some days, you just need a quick fix and a good colour-correcting, light-diffusing concealer is your best friend! My personal favourite is always the NARS Radiant Creamy concealer. It’s not specifically for the eyes but the coverage is exceptional! A cult classic is the Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat. I remember buying one with my first ever payslip and it was every bit as glorious as I’d hoped! There are SO many options available now though so do your research and find the one for you. Fake it til you make it!

Fingers crossed this cheat sheet leaves you looking refreshed, glowing and awakened. Your eye cream is your super power in this instance, get using it or ordering it!

With love,
